Midwest Beach Nationals Continues to Expand
Lake of the Ozarks, MO. – The 7th annual Midwest Beach Nationals took place Sunday on the famed sands of Captain Ron’s, with nearly two hundred wrestlers from nine states bringing the heat.
The growth of women’s wrestling was evident at this year’s event, with sixty women taking part in the event, including some outstanding high school and college talent. Mariyah Brumley was one of several Missouri women standouts who participated Saturday. She finished 1st in the high school girls 185 division.
On the men’s side, there were a mix of veterans and newcomers, including athletes like former state champion and 4x All-American Lukie Christian, who heard about beach wrestling from a friend and decided to step in the circle again after a twenty year break. “Its fun and its something I thought I could do”, Christian said. “I had a good background in freestyle and greco, and I love throws, so it seemed like a fun thing to do. I trained for three months and got back and shape and now here I am”. Christian finished 2nd in the Men’s 155 lb. class.
In addition to the individual tournament, the tournament added a dual team competition this year, which organizers Austin Roper and Cody Hummer said were a big success. “It took some work to get the teams together, but the action they brought Saturday was worth the effort”, Hummer said.
