Inaugural Dual Event Kicks Off Beach Nationals Weekend!
Carolina Beach, NC- International athletes from Barbados and Jamaica banded together and scored victory in the first ever Ultimate X Dual competition.
The format featured four athletes for each team, including an age group girl and boy, and 2 senior level athletes for each team. Wrestlers squared off in a best of three series with each other, with each point in competition being scored for their team, plus bonus points depending on the type of win.
In the U15 Women’s match up Rebecca Williams of Barbados scored a 3-0 decision over Lena Underbakke of Ohio in round one, and then followed with a 5-0 victory in round two.
Kodi Marshall used his experience in the sand to score a 3-0 decision over hometown crowd favorite Mac Kopelman of Wilmington in round one of the U16 men’s match up. Kopelman made adjustments and evened the score in round two with a 5-2 decision. The rubber match went saw Marshall score a 3-1 decision.
In the senior men’s competition Jordan Mitchell of Team Jamaica squared off with former University of Maryland wrestler Joseph Barber . Barber was scrappy, but Mitchell showed off his power and scored two 5-1 decisions to take the series.
The final senior men’s match up gave Team USA the most to cheer about as US World Team Member Jamal Morris of Florida scored two strong decisions over Theron Asher of Jamaica
In the end the international squad walked away with a 35-22 victory to claim bragging rights as the champions of Ultimate X 1.
