300 Wrestlers from 30 States Converge In Carolina
Carolina Beach, NC– A breezy, cool morning gave way to a glorious afternoon of exciting beach wrestling at the 2025 Beach Wrestling National Championships held May 10 in Carolina Beach.
Competitors from thirty states converged for an eight ring spectacle of beach wrestling action that left viewers near and far buzzing. Entries included first time kids, moms, experienced collegiate wrestlers, coaches, and many more, all coming together for a great mix of inspiring stories.
Bremerton, Washington’s Magnus Michaelson kept the Michaelson tradition alive, joining older brothers Thor and Lars (now at Stanford) as beach nationals alum.
Jaylen “Rain” Erwin also joined the “family business” of beach wrestling, as she became an 8U girls champion in her very first ever competition. Rain’s older sister Jayceemae won her a beach title in the 14U women’s division to add to her greco-roman, freestyle, and folkstyle titles earned earlier this year. And Rain’s oldest brother officiated the event, while her other two brothers also participated.
Former All-Marine Team member and 2021 Pan-Am Greco Champion Jamel Johnson traded his competitor status for coach status as his two sons Elohim and Elijah competed, along with his wife Elizabeth, who entered her first ever wrestling competition in the senior women’s division.
Every athlete from Master F competitors to 6U brought a unique story to the sand with them, and many added to their wrestling journey legacy with the addition of beach wrestling to their resume.
Senior athletes, as well as U17 and U20 wrestlers battled for world team slots. No doubt many of the age group winners will be taking to the international sands of Greece later this fall in the age group world championships, while the seniors will be hitting the Beach Wrestling World Series Circuit across the globe.
