North Carolina To Become First to Sanction Beach Wrestling as HS Sport!

NCHSAA Agrees to Pilot Beach Wrestling as Emerging Spring Sport For over a decade North Carolina has hosted the USA Beach Nationals in Carolina Beach, drawing wrestlers from across the country as well as international competitors. Lots of North Carolina kids have been showing up too, and now, the increased interest from schools across the state is leading to an exciting development. Beginning in 2025 in conjunction with NCHSAA realignment, the state has agreed to pilot Beach Wrestling as a spring sport for both men and women. Teams will consist of seven wrestlers for each gender. Weight classes will simply group two of the existing weight classes for men (ex. 106 and 113 would be combined), while the women would combine the existing twelve weights to make six weight classes, plus the addition of a 235+ category. Beach Wrestling Kicks Off on Both Coasts!

Both East and West Coast Host First Events of the ’24 Season Beach Wrestling is BACK, as the 2024 season kicked off Saturday with the 2nd Annual Atlantic Beach Championships in Atlantic Beach, NC. The event drew competitors from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, and featured a spectacular day of perfect weather and great beach wrestling action. First time participants were well represented, but there were also some “celebrity” sightings, including 2023 U17 World Champion Kennedie Snow, and 2023 World Team Member Jamel Johnson. Amazing Acapulco

Team USA Starts Season with Impressive Showing –Acapulco, Mexico– Legends of Gold to found in Mexico are alive and well after Justin Benjamin of Illinois started the Beach Wrestling World Series season with a historic gold medal performance in stop 1 of this year’s Series. Benjamin became the first U.S. man to win a Senior World-level gold medal, and only the second American of any gender, with his victory in a very competitive 70 kg division. Benjamin finished the weekend with an impressive 5-0 record for the tournament, including an impressive 6 second fall in his semi-final bout. Returning world medalist Ty Loethen of Missouri also lit up the sand, earning Top Throw honors in the men’s division, bringing home the $1000 prize that goes with the award and continuing to produce excitement in his performances. 2024 Beach Wrestling World Series Kicks Off With Pan-Am Championships Acapulco, Mexico– A veteran team of US Athletes will travel South in a few weeks to represent Team USA in the first stop of the 2024 Beach Wrestling World Series. The 2024 Beach Wrestling World Series kicks off with a stop in one of Mexico’s most famous beach destinations and promises to be another breakout year for Team USA. Coach Timmy Box will oversee the first contingent of US Athletes to hit the sand this spring, which will include 2023 80kg World bronze medalist Ty Loethen. Loethen enjoyed one of the most successful seasons ever for an American beach wrestler in 2023, and is poised to challenge for a World Title this season. Irons Brings Home Caribbean Gold!

90KG Champion Earns Caribbean Respect Bridgetown, Barbados– Jabari Irons of the United States pushed 3X Pan-American Champion Yurieski Torreblanca of Cuba to the brink in the Grand Championship semi-finals, but Torreblanca  scored a late point that propelled him to victory, setting up a finals match with last year’s Barbados Open Grand Champion Charlie Bowing (80kg) of England. In the end Torreblanca showed why he is one of the top wrestlers in the world, winning 3-0 over Bolwing to take home the Grand Championship for this year’s Open. 70KG was won by home crowd favorite Kwami Inniss of Barbados won a very tough 70kg bracket by virtue of a spectacular three pointer against Shiaeine Blake of Jamaica.
